In celebration of the Irish cinema release of the studio’s new feature film The Breadwinner, the Butler Gallery is honoured to present an interactive, multi-media exhibition that includes a diverse selection of original drawings by the studio team. These works on paper reveal the multiplicity of processes involved in the realisation of an animated film.
Directed by Nora Twomey and based on the award-winning, best-selling young adult novel by Deborah Ellis, The Breadwinner is a meticulously crafted story of self-empowerment and imagination in the face of oppression. It is the visually stunning and moving story of Parvana, an 11-year-old girl growing up under Taliban rule in Afghanistan in 2001. When her father is wrongfully arrested, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy in order to support her family. With undaunted courage, Parvana draws strength from the fantastical stories she invents as she embarks on a quest to find her father and reunite her family.
Drawing and painting is at the core of the artform of animation and this is beautifully conveyed in the exquisite watercolours, gouaches and pencil drawings that enrich this exhibition. Remarkable cut-outs bring Parvana’s Story World to life; creating a unique aesthetic full of magic and wonder.
This multi-media exhibition, curated by Anna O’Sullivan and designed by Steven McNamara of ROJI, provides an imaginative and accessible viewing of Cartoon Saloon’s movie-making process.
