The Butler Gallery runs a rich and varied education programme linked to exhibitions at the Gallery and the Butler Gallery Collection, aimed at a variety of audences of diverse agegroups, backgrounds and abilities. These include school children and students, families, adults and community groups with activity taking the form of talks, discussions, workshops, residencies, one-off events and special projects devised in collaboration with artists, audience groups and external partners.
Family
The Butler Gallery’s Family Programme is one of the longest standing and successful aspects of the Education Programme. It consists of an ongoing series of artist-led, interactive workshops in the Gallery and annual large-scale family events. The emphasis is on looking, discussing and creating experimental work in response to exhibitions.
Schools
The Butler Gallery runs an extensive outreach programme with primary and secondary schools in Kilkenny city and county, bringing the Gallery’s work and contemporary arts practice in general into the classroom. As well as special projects, the Butler Gallery also invites schools to take part in free Gallery Talks at any time of the year and specially tailored Schools’ Artist Talks and Study Days with exhibiting artists and experts.
Adult
As well as Schools and Family activity, we offer adults the chance to engage further with exhibitions at the Gallery and aspects of contemporary art in general through artist talks, panel discussions and the unique 5 to 6 Womens’ Art Project.
Arts in Health
The Butler Gallery has been involved in a number of initiatives with St. Lukes Hospital in Kilkenny over the past few years including the loaning of work to the hospital, an exhibition of posters designed using images from the Butler Collection to highlight the positive effects of the arts in healthcare settings, and the recent development of a natural garden space for users of the Department of Psychiarty at St. Lukes.
Professional Development
The Butler Gallery is committed to the professional development of those working in the gallery education field. This includes presenting at peer led worskhops and conferences, offering professional development courses to artist educators working on its education programme and the development of PACE, the Partnership for the Arts through Creative Engagement, which can be accessed at artspace.ie/about_us |
